Bree of Colorado, is a very gentle, loving giant! Bree started the first year of her life in southern CO, as an out-door dog who was purchased to protect the farm goats from coyotes. However, she doesn’t have a mean bone in her body and very much prefers to be in-doors and cuddling! She was relinquished because she lacked guard dog skills and the owner claimed she jumped on her when she would walk outside. I would likely get excited when I saw a human to pet me also! We have not experienced that jumping. If she gets excitable and hoppy, we simply assert that she stay down, and that has been sufficient.
When we received her from the relinquishing family, she had never been inside a house and was VERY filthy. We bathed her for about an hour, and she even let us blow dry her for another hour. So, she is recently bathed and Furminated!
Because of her lack of human contact she is a little shy at first, but she sure does love to be pet and cuddled. We and our 4 dogs, 1 cat, have had the pleasure of spending the last week with Bree and believe you are getting one of the sweetest fosters we have ever had. Below are some of her habits we have encountered:
Eating:
Bree is a finicky eater! She likes to eat in private, so we would put her in another room away from the rest of our crew to eat her meals. My guess is she is more of a grazer but due to our pet’s routine she did not have the option. To entice her, we would mix a little wet food in with her kibble which she seems to prefer. I am certain that when she adjusts to her forever home she will settle into a routine and become more confident. She doesn’t seem to like treats which leads us to believe she is not food motivated at this time, although once she gains some confidence she may…She eats twice daily, at 6:30am and 5pm. We are feeding her the wet to stimulate her eating and she can put on a bit of extra weight.
Play Behavior:
Bree is a very shy due to her lack of human connection so play is foreign to her at this time. We discovered a very adorable quirk which she seems to love! We have a dog toy box and she loves to gather all of the toys (one by one), take them to her bed, and lay on them. As I am sure you are aware, she is a working dog and feels compelled to find things to keep herself busy; her toy hoarding seems to fulfill that desire at this particular time. We can tell she has a desire to play with other dogs but really has no idea how that works; our guess is she will learn with more exposure to other dogs. Bree is submissive to other animals and has shown zero aggression towards other pets, which includes cats and dogs.
Walking:
Bree has very little training (other than the past week) on a lease. She is smart and started to pick up on appropriate walking behaviors, although more training in this area is needed. She is still very sensitive to noises that are foreign to her (cars, barking dogs, loud noises) but we are certain she will adapt with continued training in this area. We highly recommend a martingale collar so she does not slip out of a collar. Because of her shyness she has difficulty sitting when prompted to do so; she will lie down in a submissive manor rather than sit at attention. More training in this area will improve her confidence.
Sleeping:
Bree has very little issues sleeping where ever you create a spot for her. She sleeps throughout the night without needing to take a bathroom break. She was an outdoor dog so if she needs to, she will sleep on the floor but since we introduced her to a dog bed she definitely prefers her own comfy bed (don’t we all!). If you are so inclined, I am certain she would love to cuddle in a bed with her new family!
Interactions with others:
As I stated earlier, Bree has shown zero signs of aggression with any of our other pets. Our pets are mostly seasoned and low energy, and our cat is dominated by nature. Due to her timid demeanor we can assume she will most likely take a submissive role in most interactions with other pets. She’s met several strangers (humans) who entered the house and she was all wiggles and wags.
Vet Info:
We have not noticed any health issues while she was with us.
Between my partner and I, we have been doing rescue work for more than 20 years and believe Bree is one of the sweetest fosters we have encountered. She will provide her forever home with a lot of love (and some hair) for a very long time!
